VirtualDJ No Sound or Headphone Cue on Windows

Practical Windows verification workflow

Check Windows playback first, then master routing, then headphone cue assignment; reconnect external interfaces one at a time.

  1. Record the application version and Windows edition before making changes.
  2. Test the simplest working setup using one known-good local audio file.
  3. Change only one device, setting or feature at a time, and note the result.
  4. Recheck the result after restarting the software, then save a fallback configuration.
Quick answer. Check whether the deck and master meters move, then verify the audio device and physical output. A silent headphone cue often involves routing rather than the music file.

Divide the problem into stages

When headphone cue is silent, first confirm the physical output and the selected audio device. A controller with its own interface may require a different routing configuration from the laptop’s headphone jack.

Use one playing deck and a separate cued deck to test master and headphone paths independently. Change only one setting at a time so the successful fix is identifiable.

Check the output you actually selected

The Windows default playback device and the output selected in VirtualDJ may not be the same. A USB controller can expose its own audio device while the laptop speakers remain the system default.

Inspect the application's audio configuration and the physical cable path. If the master goes to controller outputs, speakers connected only to the computer will not hear that output. Also check hardware level controls and whether the amplifier is on the expected input.

Test headphone cue separately

Use two different tracks and preview the quiet deck. Inspect the cue button, headphone volume and cue/master blend. An output that always follows the master may have been assigned to the wrong channel pair.

Consult the manual for the exact device. Do not copy another controller's channel numbers. A single conventional headphone socket does not, by itself, prove that independent stereo master and cue outputs are available.

Restore a simple baseline

Temporarily use the standard interface and a known audio configuration. Disable optional effects for the test. Save the current settings first so that changes are reversible.

If crackles occur rather than silence, consider the driver and buffer configuration separately. Change one setting at a time, listen again and note the result. Avoid unsupported registry edits or broad security changes.

What to send to support

Include the Windows version, VirtualDJ build, device model, driver details and a screenshot of the audio setup. State whether the master meter moves and whether a local track plays with the external device disconnected.

Should I reinstall immediately?

Not usually as the first step. A reinstall may leave the same routing error in place and make it harder to explain what changed.

Can a streaming problem look like no sound?

Yes. Test a known local file to distinguish catalog access from the output path.
